Hundreds of purple
clad supporters of the Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory
Walk took to the SIUE campus Saturday to raise awareness and set a new
record in donations for the battle with Alzheimer's. The
numbers are still being tallied, but as of the start of the walk the
amount raised was over $52,000 and climbing. Teams from all around
the Metro East (including team Get Up & Go!) took part in the walk which
draws over 200,000 people each year to locations all over the U.S.
Over
45 teams were registered for Saturday's walk with such names as "Alz in
the Family", "Team Tex" and "Grandmas Angels". Team "Precious
Moments", led by team captain Mary Mueller, was the lead fundraiser,
raising over $11,000 alone for the cause.
Walkers ranged in age from 2 to over 80 and had the chance to walk
either a 1 mile or 3 mile route through the lovely campus.
Refreshments and information booths were on hand, as well as music and
activities for the kids. Everyone had a great time and took joy in
knowing that they were able to make a difference in the struggle with
Alzheimer's.
The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® is the nation's largest event
to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research –
and it calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight
against this fatal disease. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than
$230 million for the cause.
As the 6th leading cause of death in America, on average someone is
diagnosed with Alzheimer's every 71 seconds. The cause is
particularly important to baby-boomers who find themselves both as care
givers for elderly relatives afflicted with the disease and prime
candidates themselves for the future.
The Alzheimer's Association, the leading voluntary health organization
in Alzheimer care, support and research, is dedicated to finding
prevention methods, treatments and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s.
